Three months into the sea turtle nesting season, here’s the scoreboard for nests in north county.
Loggerheads are the most common sea turtle in Florida and nest from April through September. Loggerhead turtles weigh 200 to 350 pounds and are about three feet long.
Experts are hoping the strong nesting counts in recent years will continue.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center officials count the nests on about 10 miles 9.5 miles of beach from North Palm Beach to the northern Palm Beach County border with Martin County.
Leatherbacks nest in Florida from March through July.
The turtles, which weigh 700 to 1,500 pounds and are four to eight feet long, are considered critically endangered by the World Conservation Union, according to the center.
