What’s that six-foot-tall gadget that looks like a scarecrow with cameras perched on the north side of Indiantown Road, at the end of the west bound off ramp from I-95?

Readers asked, so the Palm Beach Post went to the source: The Florida Department of Transportation.

Here’s the response:

The device is a virtual weigh station to monitor trucks that jump off I-95 to avoid the weigh station in Martin County.

The cameras are looking for violations in three areas:

  • Trucks operating who have been put OOS (out of service) or deemed to have poor safety ratings
  • Trucks with overdue citations to the state
  • Trucks who may be overweight or in violation of aforementioned infractions.

The system is monitored by the Motor Carrier Compliance Division.
