The second day of the Honda Classic was full of interesting moments, including a golfer stripping to his boxers to hit his ball out of the water.
Earlier Friday, a spectator got bonked in the head by a stray ball on the Champion course at PGA National. Then Sergio Garcia, last year’s second-place finisher, lent fellow golfer Paul Casey a hand by shooing away geese after they swooped in and caused Casey to back away from his putt.
And then there was Shawn Stefani, the golfer from Texas who stripped down to his boxers to avoid dirtying his clothes while he freed his ball from the water.
Wait, what?! Here’s a little more about Stefani and his antics.
He’s still looking for his first win on the PGA Tour. Despite Stefani’s devotion, he won’t get his first PGA Tour win at this year’s Honda Classic. He missed the cut by two strokes Friday. He has two Web.com Tour victories. The 35-year-old turned pro in 2005.
He was a really good sport about the escapade. When he first stripped down at No. 6, he thought only the few people following his group that included Andres Gonzales and Willy Wilcox would witness it. But a Golf Channel camera behind the green caught it all on film. It was replayed many times over.
Stefani joked about it with the media. Asked if he might have an opportunity as an underwear model:
“I was wearing my Calvin Klein’s. They don’t pay me, but maybe they will,” he told Post reporter Dave George and a Golf Channel reporter.
He’s not the first to strip for the game. He quipped that he looked better than Henrik Stenson, who did the same at Doral in 2009. Gary Woodland took his pants off at the Honda Classic last year, but he was a little more modest. Unlike Stefani, he kept on his shirt and hat.
