Waste Management wins trash collection contract in Jupiter

Waste Management will continue collecting trash in the town  after a unanimous vote by the town council Tuesday night.

Advanced Disposal Services Solid Waste Southeast Inc. applied to replace Houston-based Waste Management, which has had the residential and commercial contract with Jupiter for about 30 years.

No residents spoke for or against the proposal before the vote at the Tuesday meeting.

The council initially awarded the five-year contract to Advanced Disposal on Nov. 1. The council reversed itself and on Nov. 15 voted to award the contract to Waste Management.

Advanced Disposal filed a bid protest a week later.

The protest was rejected by the town council, which on Jan. 17 approved on first reading to award the contract to Waste Management.

Under Advanced’s proposal, town residents would pay about $1 million less annually — a saving of about $50 per residence. Advanced proposed charging $8.45 monthly for residential collection of yard waste, vegetation, trash and recycling.

Waste Management’s contract calls for $12.45 per month.

There are about 29,000 residential customers in Jupiter, according to town records. At about $150 per year per customer, Waste Management will collect about $4.4 million annually from residential customers.

The contract calls for commercial collection costs to remain the same, about $7.75 per cubic yard.
