Fishermen, folks eating their lunch and waterfront pedestrians were wondering what the heck was that barge — with a big crane on top — floating in the Loxahatchee River at Sawfish Bay Park on Friday afternoon.

The barge is toting the remains of the old Flagler bridge in Palm Beach to build artificial reefs off Palm Beach County.

“The piling and beams are great for reefs because they have flat surfaces that the fish like to hide in,” said Dan Bates, deputy director of Palm Beach County‚Äôs Department of Environmental Resources Management.
