Jack Bello Jr. didn’t come away from the Jr. Home Run Derby in San Diego a winner, but better opportunities awaited.
The 12-year-old Palm Beach Gardens boy tied for fourth place in the contest July 9 at the Padres’ Petco Park during MLB All-Star Week, dad John Bello said Tuesday. The first baseman and pitcher was in competition with seven other sluggers in his division.
Jack and his family left San Diego right after the competition so he could play with his Palm Beach Gardens Thunder team in Virginia. The 12 and under team earned a spot in the Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series in Ocala, Florida, Aug. 6-13, Bello said.
It’s not the only team in a Cal Ripken World Series. Palm Beach Gardens is hosting the nationwide contest for the age division of players 10 and younger. Fourteen youngsters from Palm Beach Gardens baseball get to compete in the tournament Aug. 4-12 at the fields off Burns Road.
