How to keep your home safe while you’re away for the summer

North Palm Beach police have a few safety tips and a free service to deter potential burglars when people head out of town for the summer months or a short vacation.

They’ll keep an eye on your business or your house if you fill out a “vacation house watch” form, available online and in the lobby of Village Hall, 501 U.S. 1. They do it as a courtesy, so you shouldn’t expect them to be the only caretakers, as a disclaimer on the form indicates.

Their other advice to avoid break-ins this summer includes locking all windows and doors, asking a neighbor or friend to watch your home and suspending mail delivery while you’re away. If you don’t have a garage to protect your car, you can park it in a location that makes it look like your home. Be sure to remove all valuables first.
