Karen Golonka steps down after a quarter-century as Jupiter mayor

In a tearful address to a crowded council chambers, Karen Golonka stepped down as mayor of Jupiter on Tuesday night after serving eight straight three-year terms.

“I never set out to be mayor…Leadership is about accomplishing goals and standing up for what’s right…I thank you for allowing me to pursue my dream of helping this community,” said Golonka.

The council began Golonka’s last meeting as mayor with announcing a Top 10 list of Golonka’s accomplishments.

They included bringing Scripps Research Institute to Jupiter, controlling growth along Indiantown Road, preserving Fullerton Island and bringing Abacoa to Jupiter.

Riverwalk, the town’s 2.5-mile pedestrian/bicycle lane that is planned to run from the Atlantic Ocean at Ocean Way to the Jupiter Inlet.
