Long-time Palm Beach Gardens resident and City Council observer Joan Elias has quite the sense of humor.
She quipped at a February meeting that she and resident Bill Ingram wanted to have recliners in the front row when the new City Hall was built years ago.
“Bill and I never got the recliners, and I know Bill is reclining in heaven,” Elias said. “I’m still here without a recliner!”
Not for long. She found a black leather recliner, front and center, waiting for her at the Council meeting Thursday. “I’m so comfy!” she said before getting up to speak during public comment.
The recliner was so comfortable, in fact, that she needed help getting up from it.
“I think you’ll probably leave it here for me, because if I hear something, I usually like to jump up, and I can’t jump up from there, so keep that in mind,” she bantered Thursday.
Mayor Eric Jablin and Councilman Joe Russo, who have been in office for more than 20 years, said they’ve rarely seen Elias miss a meeting.
She elicited laughter at an otherwise mundane budget hearing in September with this comment:
“In the 23 years I have been coming to these budget meetings and council meetings, I have never been to a budget hearing that somebody didn’t get up and b**** about something, and I want to congratulate staff and council for doing such a wonderful job that you did not irritate, apparently, anybody in the city, and I don’t believe it!”
