A Palm Beach Power Squadron boating class is planned March 5 and 6 in Lake Park.

You don’t want to find out when you’re caught in a storm on the water that your boating skills aren’t up to snuff.

Palm Beach Power Squadron is offering its boating safety course Saturday and Sunday at its headquarters, 1125 Old Dixie Highway, in Lake Park. The classroom is about a half mile south of Northlake Boulevard.

The state-approved course is $30 a person. Young people between 12 and 19 years old will be admitted free for a limited time when they’re accompanied by a parent. Registration starts 8:15 a.m. Saturday. The class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday includes a course review that starts at 2 p.m., followed by a 60-question exam. Passing the exam will get you a certificate and Boating Safety Education ID Card, which the state mails out in about two weeks.

Call Bill Eldridge at 561-254-5609 for additional information.

The parents of Austin Stephanos, one of two teens from Tequesta lost at sea in July, are also sponsoring boating safety classes for youth in north county. The U.S. Coast Guard will teach the classes beginning March 12 one Saturday a month at the Loxahatchee River Center in Jupiter.
